Statement |
I carved a Toki Poutangata from a hunk of Kauri that was given to me from a late carver i knew. The stone that has been tide down onto the handle was found in Meek Woods Reserve (Johnsonville) by my grandfather in 1955 (also named Maximillian Fuhrer). At the time he didn't think much of it due to being an immigrant and lack of knowledge when it came to Māaori culture. I remember seeing it as a kid when I visited and was always fascinated by it. I think that's the reason I picked carving as a hobby. |
