I have always been interested in the politics of culture. Especially how Māori culture is used in Pākehā culture. I have always loved to draw and have always believed in the importance of toi whakairo. I have taken the design of my brother’s moko and transposed this to whakairo within an English object – a cricket bat. In this way I am imposing my cultural heritage upon a Pākehā icon. This is an attempt at reversal of the colonialization that has been imposed on Māori.
