Statement |
My Māori ancestry was cut off generations ago when christianity became present in New Zealand. For me these paintings show the connection between my Māori identity and my religious upbringing. My paintings explore the ideas of identity and inner turmoil in relation to religion and faith. The use of my face in these paintings is to express the personal struggle that people can face and the use of Jesus is to represent Christianity and as a symbol of other religions and faiths. |
