Statement

I embrace my Māori heritage as an artist but think sometimes Māori culture can be scary and exclusive to non-Māori (sometimes even to Māori). With this artwork I wanted to show Māori culture isn’t something to fear and should be shared with everyone. I made up my own whakairo patterns to highlight some of my favourite features of Māori art. The cord represents traditional weaving, but also reminds me of rigging on older English ships. I wanted to show what was unique and special about Māori culture but that it can also have similarities with other cultures as well.
