"Qualify for the Future World: Kia noho takatū ki tō āmua ao" encapsulates NZQA’s role and ambitions for learners and for New Zealand.

What does the future hold? NZQA needs to respond to the global and digital environment that is integral to the first decades of the 21st century. The changes we are making now will lead to NCEA being online, on-demand, anywhere, anytime. The way we do assessments and what we assess will change.

Our customers want robust assessment and quality assurance processes that lead to relevant and portable qualifications. And these qualifications need to prepare learners for a swiftly changing world of work and civic responsibility At NZQA we are interested in how technology lifts the 'possibilities' for learners.

About Future State

Ko tā te kitenga nui o NZQA, he whakatena i te ākonga “Kia noho takatū ki tōna āmua ao”.  Nā reira ko te whakaaro ia, me pēhea e pāhautea ai te mātauranga, te mahi, me te nohonga hapori, ā ngā tau e heke mai nei.

NZQA’s vision is for New Zealand learners to ‘Qualify for the future world: Kia noho takatū ki tō āmua ao’. This urges us to consider what the future of education, work and society will be.

New and emerging technologies will continue to have a significant impact on people’s lives for the foreseeable future. People with a diverse range of skills and capabilities will be best placed to thrive in this global, digital, connected world.

The nature of education and work are not immune from these rapid changes. People increasingly demand greater flexibility in where, when and how their learning can be accessed, assessed and recognised. They also need to keep their skills up-to-date and continue to demonstrate learning throughout their working lives to future-proof their employability.

We need to meet the current and future needs of learners, so they are equipped to meet the challenges of learning, working and living in the 21st century.

To further support and refine our strategic direction, we developed our Future State portfolio. While our core business remains the delivery of credible, responsive, robust and trusted assessment, quality assurance and regulatory activities, we have come to see these through the lenses of improving equity and enabling lifelong learning, while improving people’s experience when interacting with NZQA

To achieve our vision, we need to maintain trust and confidence in our assessment and qualifications systems, while looking forward to identify what learners, education organisations and employers will need to be successful in the future world.
