About this standard

Haka is a traditional Māori war performance or call to challenge, and can be performed by men and women. This unit standard focuses on knowledge and essential skills of haka.  

People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of haka, and the essential skills of haka.

Narrator: This video gives examples of Haka that can be used to demonstrate the categories of:

  • Tūtū Ngārahu 
  • Peruperu 
  • Whakatu Waewae 

Level 2 assessment requires the student to perform items from memory demonstrating appropriate movement. Level 2 assessment does not require the student to perform in public to demonstrate competency. 
Students from the Skills New Zealand Rangatahi Maia programmes of Manaakitanga Aotearoa Trust in Rotorua, Pounamu Māori Performing Arts in Auckland and students from Western Heights High School are featured in this video.
