Māori providers

Just over 40 registered providers identify themselves as Māori providers. These educational institutions deliver Māori subjects, conduct their courses in a Māori environment, or focus specifically on the needs of Māori learners.

NZQA statistics show that Māori providers play a critical role in lifting the achievement, retention and participation levels of Māori learners.

Provider development and support

NZQA works one-to-one with Māori education providers and legislated wānanga to support them in their development aspirations for iwi and Māori.

Regional facilitators work with Māori providers to assist with programme development, quality management systems and communications with NZQA.

Te Rau Awhina: The Guiding Leaf

In 2008, NZQA published Te Rau Awhina: The Guiding Leaf (PDF, 1.2MB). This report discusses research undertaken on the teaching and learning practices of 13 nominated Māori and Pasifika private training establishments and their programme design and development to meet the needs of their students.

The report identifies the characteristics of these PTEs’ classroom management techniques, teaching and learning, programme development and design and organisational characteristics. The report concludes with three key components that were seen as important for creating a holistic learning environment:

  • The surrogate whānau/aiga concept
  • The concept of belonging
  • The concept of creating a greater humanity/being inclusive of all cultures.

The research identified the importance of goal-setting, reflection and evaluation, by both the individual learner and staff, as well as the PTE as a whole. Of particular importance is encouraging PTEs to reflect on and evaluate their own performance.

Further discussion can be held with members of the Quality Assurance Māori team (contact details above).

Māori qualifications

Many Māori providers are keen to deliver Māori qualifications or national standards as part of their courses. Contact the Māori Qualifications Service for assistance.

NZQA also produces a range of free assessment resources for subjects like Whakairo and Māori Performing Arts.
