Takiala Pasifika 2020-2023

Information about the Takiala Pasifika, our action plan for Pacific learner success

In September 2020, we launched the Takiala Pasifika. It shows how we're helping Pacific learners, families and communities reach their goals.

In Tokelau, 'takiala' means compass or pathfinder. The Takiala Pasifika is our compass for Pacific success.

“We should not be defined by the smallness of our islands but in the greatness of our oceans. We are the sea, we are the ocean, Oceania is us.”

Why we need the Takiala Pasifika

The world is changing. It's more global, digital and connected than ever before.

The world of education and work isn't the same as it used to be. In fact, it's very different to what early Pacific people in Aotearoa experienced.

But Pacific peoples' dreams and hopes are the same. They want their children to do well at school. They want their children to contribute to the family, community and the nation.

The education, training and employment pipeline has to meet these wants and needs. It has to prepare Pacific learners for the changing world.

This world is digital, automated and how we'll work is different.

If Pacific learners reach their potential, it's good for families, communities and Aotearoa.

The 30-year education vision

The Takiala Pasifika is in line with the Ministry of Education's plan for Pacific success. It's also in line with the Government's 30-year education vision.

The 5 objectives at the heart of this vision are:

  • learners at the centre
  • barrier-free access
  • quality teaching and leadership
  • meeting the future of learning and work
  • world-class inclusive public education.
