Assessment Report

Level 1 Chinese 2020

Standards 90868 90871

Part A: Commentary

Overall, the listening and the reading assessments for Chinese Level 1 gave candidates opportunities to demonstrate their understanding while also allowing them to show evidence of inference and analysis as required for Merit and Excellence. The questions guided candidates to select the relevant information and evidence to support their answers, rather than attempting to translate the entire text. Part (a) of each question generally provided opportunities to show general and clear holistic understanding, while part (b) generally asked for inferred meanings. This was an effective way to scaffold responses for candidates of all language levels.
