90814: Demonstrate understanding of aspects of sustainability in different contexts
Part A: Commentary
This examination is the more popular of the two Level 2 Education for Sustainability external assessments. Most candidates demonstrated understanding of the aspects of sustainability. Explaining the interrelationships and the wider implications of the interrelationships between the aspects of sustainability was a significant challenge for some candidates.
Part B: Report on standards
Candidates who were awarded Achievement commonly:
- provided an explanation of how practices included in the resource booklet contributed to a sustainable future
- referred to at least two contexts and two aspects of sustainability
- referred to the Māori values and concepts of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga.
Candidates whose work was assessed as Not Achieved commonly:
- attempted unsuccessfully, or did not attempt, to provide an explanation of how practices included in the resource booklet contribute to a sustainable future
- did not refer to at least two contexts and two aspects of sustainability
- did not refer to the Māori values and concepts of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga.
Candidates who were awarded Achievement with Merit commonly:
- provided an in-depth explanation of how practices included in the resource booklet contribute to a sustainable future
- referred to at least two contexts and two aspects of sustainability
- referred to the Māori values and concepts of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga
- provided an explanation of how the interrelationships between two or more aspects of sustainability contribute to a sustainable future.
Candidates who were awarded Achievement with Excellence commonly:
- provided a comprehensive explanation of how practices included in the resource booklet contribute to a sustainable future
- integrated at least two contexts and two aspects of sustainability
- integrated the Māori values and concepts of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga
- provided a comprehensive explanation of how the interrelationships between two or more aspects of sustainability contribute to a sustainable future, including reference to wider implications.
91733: Demonstrate understanding of initiatives that contribute to a sustainable future
Part A: Commentary
The resource materials stimulated strong discussion points. Candidates generally wrote their answers succinctly.
While fewer candidates completed this standard than for 90814, overall, this standard was completed more successfully, with a higher than usual percentage of candidates achieving with Excellence. This could be attributed in part to an increasing awareness of sustainable initiatives and associated best practice within education and community contexts.
Part B: Report on standards
Candidates who were awarded Achievement commonly:
- provided an explanation of the importance of the initiatives with references to two aspects of sustainability
- provided an explanation of the effectiveness of the two initiatives with regard to achieving their purpose, subsequently contributing to a sustainable future
- referred to the Māori values and concepts of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga.
Candidates whose work was assessed as Not Achieved commonly:
- could not provide an explanation of the importance of the initiatives, with reference to two aspects of sustainability
- provided an incorrect explanation of the effectiveness of the two initiatives with regard to achieving their purpose, thereby contributing to a sustainable future
- did not refer to the Māori values and concepts of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga.
Candidates who were awarded Achievement with Merit commonly:
- provided an in-depth explanation of the importance of the initiatives with reference to two aspects of sustainability
- provided an in-depth explanation of the effectiveness of the two initiatives with regard to achieving their purpose, thereby contributing to a sustainable future
- referred to the Māori values and concepts of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga
- explained how one of the initiatives could apply to another context or issue, drawing out wider implications.
Candidates who were awarded Achievement with Excellence commonly:
- provided a comprehensive explanation of the importance of the initiatives with reference to two aspects of sustainability
- provided a comprehensive explanation of the effectiveness of the two initiatives, with regard to achieving their purpose, thereby contributing to a sustainable future
- integrated the Māori values and concepts of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga
- provided a comprehensive explanation of how one of the initiatives could apply to another context or issue
- provided an in-depth explanation of each of the initiatives, including their respective contributions to a sustainable future, with discussion of the wider implications.
