Standards 91138  91141

Part A: Commentary

Part B: Report on standards

91138:  Demonstrate understanding of a variety of spoken Korean texts on familiar matters

Examinations

This examination included three questions. Candidates were required to respond to all three. Questions 1 to 3 required candidates to demonstrate their understanding of a variety of spoken Korean texts on familiar matters. The questions covered the requirements of the 2021 assessment specification, which was for three spoken texts related to ideas and opinions on topics of personal and / or community interest. The questions required candidates to listen and respond to recordings of three spoken texts.

Candidates need to be aware that the overall grade for a question is based on how much of the text has been understood, and the depth of the understanding, rather than knowledge of individual lexical items. Therefore, candidates should avoid direct translation, as the translation alone is not sufficient evidence the candidate understands the meaning of the texts clearly or thoroughly. Candidates who selected evidence from the whole text and integrated them to justify their answer in a convincing manner achieved higher grades than those who correctly translated relevant chunks of the text.

Observations

Candidates who made good use of the listening notes boxes by carefully selecting relevant information from their notes and linking responses to specific details in different sections of each passage were able to answer questions directly thus avoiding repeating the question, writing down everything that was heard without selection, direct translation and making a summary at the end.

91141:  Demonstrate understanding of a variety of written and/or visual Korean texts on familiar matters

Examinations

This examination included three questions. Candidates were required to respond to all three. Questions 1 to 3 required candidates to demonstrate their understanding of a variety of written and / or visual Korean texts on familiar matters. The questions covered the requirements of the 2021 assessment specification, which was for three written texts related to ideas and opinions on topics of personal and / or community interest. The questions required candidates to read and respond to three written texts representative of different text types.

Observations

This exam overall allowed a wide range of responses. Question one allowed for the most diverse responses. As the question was one long response, a high level of critical thinking skill and solid understanding of Korean language was required for Excellence.

Candidates were able to provide beautifully crafted answers that showed thorough understanding of nuance and meaning not directly stated in the text. Questions 2 and 3 were more scaffolded for the candidates, so most candidates received higher marks in questions two and three compared to Question one.

Candidates who directly translated from texts failed to go beyond Merit.

Candidates who responded in Korean selected relevant details from the text and used their own words to answer the questions rather than lifting sentences from the texts.
