Assessment Report
Level 3 Korean 2021
Standards 91558 91561
Part A: Commentary
–
Part B: Report on standards
91558: Demonstrate understanding of a variety of extended spoken Korean texts
Examinations
This examination included three questions. Candidates were required to respond to all three. Questions 1 to 3 required candidates to demonstrate their understanding of a variety of extended spoken Korean texts. The questions covered the requirements of the 2021 assessment specification which was for three spoken texts related to concrete and abstract matters of social interest. The questions required candidates to listen and respond to recordings of three spoken texts.
Observations
Candidates need to be aware that the overall grade for a question is based on how much of the text has been understood, and the depth of the understanding, rather than knowledge of individual lexical items. Therefore, candidates should avoid direct translation, as the translation alone is not enough evidence that the candidate understands the meaning of the texts clearly or thoroughly.
Candidates who selected evidence from the whole text and integrated them to justify their answer in a convincing manner achieved higher grades than those who correctly translated relevant chunks of the text.
Grade awarding
Candidates who were awarded Achievement commonly:
- No papers were assessed as Achieved for this standard.
Candidates whose work was assessed as Not Achieved:
- No papers were assessed as Not Achieved for this standard.
Candidates who were awarded Achievement with Merit commonly:
- demonstrated a clear understanding of the texts by giving answers supported with relevant details
- provided accurate translation of the relevant chunks of the texts, but at times lacked analysis or justification.
Candidates who were awarded Achievement with Excellence commonly:
- demonstrated a thorough understanding of the texts by giving full answers supported with relevant details
- provided insightful conclusions from a range of evidence from the texts.
91561: Demonstrate understanding of a variety of extended written and/or visual Korean texts
Examinations
This examination included three questions. Candidates were required to respond to all three. Questions 1 to 3 required candidates to demonstrate their understanding of a variety of extended written and / or visual Korean texts. The questions required candidates to read and respond to three written texts representative of different text types.
Observations
Responses were mostly at M6 – E8, meaning candidates all showed a high level of CL8 language. Candidates were able to gain higher grades if they used all details from the texts and directly answered the questions. Candidates who responded in Korean should select relevant details from the texts and use their own words to answer the questions rather than lifting sentences from the texts. There were more straightforward questions that could be answered successfully if candidates had the language knowledge (which most Level 3 candidates had). There was limited opportunity for candidates to demonstrate higher level skills such as inferencing and critical thinking.
- demonstrated thorough understanding of the texts by giving full answers supported with relevant details
- provided insightful conclusions from a range of evidence from the texts.
