NCEA endorsements - check your progress online

When you log in as a secondary school Learner on the NZQA web site, the very first page you see is a list of the standards you are entered in ("entries"). As soon as results in internally assessed standards are reported by your school to NZQA, they appear next to the entries on this page. Once external assessment has been complete and the results released, those results will also appear on this page.

The entries have been grouped by year and within year by course. The courses are defined and reported by your school.

Checking course endorsement progress

From the entries and results page on the web, you can click on a course name to drill down into the details for that course, including viewing progress toward course endorsement.  For details, please read the Course endorsement rules (Schedule 1 section 2).

Unusable credits and courses not able to be endorsed

Some courses are not able to be endorsed because they have insufficient credits able to be used for endorsement. If one of your courses has insufficient credits for a course endorsement to be possible, it may be because your school never intended the course to be endorsed or it may be because the school has not reported all the standards you are entered in.

Physical Education, Religious Studies and level 3 Visual Arts courses

Usually, you will need 14 merit or excellence credits for your course to be endorsed, including 3 internally assessed credits and 3 externally assessed credits. But there are exceptions to this rule:

  • Courses containing 14 or more Physical Education credits or 14 or more Religious Studies credits are exempt from the external assessment criteria.
  • Courses containing 14 or more internally assessed Level 3 Visual Arts credits are exempt from the external assessment criteria.
  • Courses containing 14 or more externally assessed Level 3 Visual Arts criteria are exempt from the internal assessment criteria.

Courses with standards at more than one level

In most courses, all the standards will be at the same level, but some courses may have standards at different levels.

Courses are endorsed at a particular level. If the endorsement criteria can be met for a course using only level 2 standards, the course will be endorsed at level 2. If some level 1 standards are needed to gain the endorsement, the course will be endorsed at level 1. When it comes to endorsements the level is more important than the grade, so if the course can be endorsed with excellence at level 1 or with merit at level 2, the course will be endorsed with merit at level 2.
