Micro-credential equivalency with the NZQF
NZQA can assess your organisation’s micro-credential and provide you with a statement of equivalency with the credits and level on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF).
This service is available to all organisations that are not recognised Tertiary Education Organisations in New Zealand. This includes employers, regulatory and professional bodies and international providers of education.

Employers and micro-credentials
As an employer with training needs that could be met through a micro-credential, you could consider either:
- working with a Tertiary Education Organisation (TEO) or Industry Training Organisation to deliver/arrange the training that your business needs approved by NZQA as a micro-credential. Under this option, the delivery and achievement of a micro-credential would be quality assured by NZQA; or
- having your micro-credential assessed for equivalency by NZQA.
What is the benefit of having my micro-credential assessed for equivalency by NZQA?
For example, NZQA may determine that your micro-credential is equivalent to 20 credits at Level 4 on the framework. You can then share this equivalency statement with your employees/other stakeholders or customers. NZQA will also publish a register of all the micro-credentials which have been assessed for equivalency.
As an employer, this could benefit your business by encouraging and supporting your employees to gain the skills and knowledge that are needed for your business’s future success.
For your employees, this could assist them to understand the value of the micro-credential and assist them in their own career planning and lifelong learning.
Under this service, the delivery and achievement of the micro-credential is not quality-assured by NZQA.
How do I apply to have my micro-credential assessed for equivalency by NZQA?
To determine the equivalent level and credits of a micro-credential, NZQA will need information from you on the aims of the micro-credential, the content of the learning (teaching) programme and how your employees/ students will be assessed.

We will process your application within 20 working days.
What else do I need to know?
The register of equivalency list will be periodically reviewed to make sure that it is up-to-date. Please note that Micro-credentials on the register of equivalency are not part of the NZQF.
Any changes to the micro-credential after the approval, that affects the equivalent level and credits will require a new assessment by NZQA.
NZQA will also investigate any concerns that it is made aware of. This could result in removing the micro-credential from the list.
How much does it cost?
For one application for equivalency
- $900 (excluding GST)
Additional costs at $190 per hour (excluding GST) if it takes longer than four hours to process
For 2-10 applications for equivalency
- Ten applications at once is the maximum.
- $1820 (excluding GST)
Additional costs at $190 per hour (excluding GST) if it takes longer then eight hours to process
When to pay for your application
You have to pay the fee when you submit the application.
