Assessment Report
New Zealand Scholarship Spanish 2022
Standard 93007
Part A: Commentary
Candidates are required to respond to questions on the texts provided rather than give a summary of the texts. At this level, candidates should have a good understanding of the examination texts, and it is their handling of the information in the texts that is being assessed. Candidates should support their ideas and opinions with relevant information from the text and may use their own examples, should these support the argument.
Questions need to be read carefully as it is only responses to these that will be taken into consideration by the markers. For example, candidates were asked to comment on the benefit of New Year’s resolutions for society in Question One but many candidates ignored society and talked about why New Year’s resolutions are an important part of an individual’s self-improvement. Many candidates only responded to questions in their conclusions.
Candidates continue to repeat their ideas in Question Three. It is not necessary to fill the 5 minutes allowed for the recording. To maintain interest, it is often better to develop two or three ideas in a shorter timeframe.
Part B: Report on performance standard
Candidates who were awarded Scholarship with Outstanding Performance commonly:
- provided interesting ideas in responding to the texts, rather than merely summarising the texts
- developed ideas by giving pertinent and thoughtful examples
- produced well-organised responses
- wrote and spoke articulately in English and Spanish.
Candidates who were awarded Scholarship commonly:
- focused on answering the questions providing relevant information to support their answers
- developed ideas with relevant examples
- produced organised responses
- wrote and spoke accurately in English and Spanish.
Other candidates
Candidates who were not awarded Scholarship commonly:
- did not answer the questions asked
- did not provide complete responses
- used language that was difficult to follow
- did not use paragraphs; responses were disorganised
- wrote a personal response without supporting material from the text.
