Music Technology - annotated sequence exemplars level 1 US27656

Demonstrate and apply introductory knowledge of music technology equipment and techniques

The following exemplars are student evidence for Outcome 2.1 where students are required to create, edit and mix a simple sequence using the features and functions of music technology equipment and techniques according to documented equipment specifications.

An indication of length which allows students to meet Excellence criteria would be between 16-24 bars. Range includes a minimum of two of – metronome, events, data parameters, event list.

Achieved

Commentary Student response

Exemplar 1

This exemplar has been created using Logic Pro 8.

The range in this sequence includes the use of: experimentation with recording with and without metronome; pitch, duration and placement events edited (manually and quantised); some use of track volume and effects parameters; identification of event list mistakes.

It meets Achievement criteria as the student has created, edited and mixed a simple sequence. The range in this sequence includes the use of:

Keeping this exemplar from meeting higher criterion is the mechanical feel to the recording, the use of piano instead of guitar and the quantise ‘glitch’ at 57”.

Somebody that I used to know

Piano, drum-kit (MP3, 1.9MB)

Exemplar 2

This exemplar has been created using Studio One.

Commentary on how the student's work meets the requirements for Achieved is included in the video.

Merit

Commentary Student response

Exemplar 1

This exemplar has been created using Logic Pro 8.

The range in this sequence includes the use of: live recorded and step-time entry with metronome (click), pitch and duration events reviewed, mostly region quantising (necessary adjustments made), initial track volume set in the event list.

The sequence in this exemplar is generally musically convincing in that it is an accurate rendition of drum-kit/bass part, however the marimba part is less effective, being too soft in the mix.

In comparison to the Achievement exemplar, the drumbeat is consistent with the original as it drops out and returns to signal the transition between the sections.

Once timbral balance has been created this exemplar could meet Excellence criteria.

Somebody that I used to know

Guitar, bass, marimba, drum-kit (MP3, 1.7MB)

Exemplar 2

This exemplar has been created using Studio One.

Commentary on how the student's work meets the requirements for Merit is included in the video.

Excellence

Commentary Student response

Exemplar 1

This exemplar has been created using Logic Pro 8.

The range in this sequence includes the use of: live recorded entry, event quantisation, mix effect, data parameter adjustment, event list, editing as required (minimal, due to accurate live recording) of velocity.

The sequence in this exemplar is musically convincing as it contains timbral consistency with the original (guitar, upright bass and percussion). Further, timbres are balanced and particular detail has been paid to drum ‘parts’ (hi-hat etc) and accent patterns. The section transition is handled with flair.

Please note: the bass line may not be clearly represented in a small speaker system.

Somebody that I used to know

Upright bass, drum-kit (MP3, 914KB)

Exemplar 2

This exemplar has been created using Studio One.

Commentary on how the student's work meets the requirements for Excellence is included in the video.
