Statement

I chose to use my pounamu manaia taonga as the subject matter for my work as it represents the bond I have with my grandfather.

To depict this in an art work feels as though I have honoured it in some small way.  The colour palette uses vibrant colours to symbolise the energy and power it contains.

There is an interesting story about how I got it.  My grandad was fishing in the sea off the West Coast, when he pulled up his net and found the entangled pendant.  It was a beautiful bright piece of pounamu skillfully crafted in a manaia design.  He said he knew right away that it was meant for me because my name is ocean.  It has always been very special but I only realised how special when I lost it at school after photocopying it for art.  It felt like part of me was missing but thankfully, after a couple of days it was found.
